The recent AC Milan vs Chelsea game in Baltimore Maryland brought two of the top clubs in the sport to America. This was a pre season tune up game for these two clubs. Think many fans turned out? Think soccer isn't big in America?
Try 71,000 screaming fans filling M&T Bank Stadium to capacity.
Chelsea blue and Milan Red and Black jerseys everywhere.
Awesome.

Online Coupons
There are a number of great online coupon campaigns that are live on shelbystar.com.
The latest one is a buy one get one free footlong hot dog offer from Dairy Queen. This is one I plan on taking advantage of today!
Another great food coupon is a special from Cottons Seafood offering $1.00 off any plate meal. I can tell you that Cotton's portions are great and the food is too.
One other online coupon offer is for a digital thermostat installed for just $99 from Shelby Refrigeration. A buddy of mine recently tried to install his own thermostat and I know after all the trouble he went through he would have loved to have taken advantage of that coupon offer. Digital thermostats can help reduce cooling cost and givent the price of gas these days, any savings can be a big help.
I hope you are like me and take advantage of these great coupons online. Let me know if you would like a link to the coupon emailed to you. arongoss@shelbystar.com

Parents Behaving Badly
The GCCSA Rec. tournament concluded this weekend. I had the opportunity to watch some really good youth soccer.
I witnessed one particularly thrilling game that ended in a shoot out. The emotion and intensity from the fans and kids rivaled that of any major sporting event. The game ended as you would predict, with one team the winner and another team the loser.
Both teams had nothing to be ashamed of with their play on the field, they all gave it their best effort and played with a spirit and passion for the game - both things necessary to advance the sport in our country.
The ones who should be ashamed are the ones on the sidelines who did not behave, the ones with the age and experience to know better, but didn't act better. The ones who are responsible for passing on the traits of fair play, sportmanship, humility in victory and honor in defeat, but chose to blame and curse others. You know who you are. If you feel guilty right now, then I'm probably talking about you.
I certainly do not live in a glass house and I am not one to cast stones. I could have done better in my game as well.
My team lost in the first round of the tournament. After the third questionable call to go against my team I threw off my sunglasses in disgust, shattering the lenses. At the end of the game one of my players handed me the broken glasses and lenses and asked Mr. Goss, why did you throw those? I told him that I behaved badly and I should not have done that. I went on to tell him and all the other members of the team, as I promised before the game - win or lose, I am proud of you.
Here's hoping we can all remember to behave on the sidelines. It is our children who are watching us.

Youth Baseball
My oldest son moved up to Pee Wee baseball in the city park league. This is the first time I haven't been his coach in a long time.
This is a good thing. Not because I don't like to coach him, but it was time for him to hear a new voice.
The coach who "drafted" him is very knowledgeable - far more then me. The best part is that Caleb is listening to him. Who knows if he will turn in to a ball player, but as long as he continues to listen to his new coach, he will learn the fundamentals.
Baseball is a simple game but it sure is a difficult game to execute well.
I strongly believe that things work out for a reason. Although I didn't know his coach before Caleb was drafted, and didn't know any of the kids on the team, I believe he ended up where he was meant to be.
Here's to a good season - and maybe a base hit or two.

win $10,000!
Wow! I just saw an ad on shelbystar.com asking if I want to win $10,000 - click here to find out more!
I want to win $10,000, so I clicked. The leaderboard ad took me to a "landing page" for the Council on Aging/Senior Center reverse drawing fundraiser. Only 500 tickets will be sold. All 500 tickets will be drawn and posted on a board. 15 winning tickets will be drawn, each receiving a prize - the last ticket drawn is the grand prize winner of $10,000.
Sounds pretty cool, and not bad odds of winning either.
The drawing is May 3, and tickets are on sale now.
I checked the reporting on the campaign, it went live yesterday and received 6 clicks so far, delivering - a click through rate of .32%. This is above the industry average for click through. I imagine this will only improve as more folks see the compelling ad.
Who doesn't want to win $10,000? Check it out on shelbystar.com.
*"Landing pages" are great for folks who don't have websites - or want to supply specific information that might not be contained in a website. We are equipped to build you a landing page to drive conversions - results to you!

Pinewood Derby
My son competed in the Pinewood Derby for Pack 104 last night. His car made it to the 5th round. (one round farther then last year). In the double elimination tourney his car lost to the eventual 5th place winner then lost to the eventual 4th place winner, ending his chances for reaching the district tournament. (The top 5 cars advance to compete in the district tournament).
This event is one of the coolest events that the Cub scouts do all year. The opportunity to work with my son, helping him build the car, paint it and get it set just right is half the fun. The competition and the chance to race the other kids from his pack is pretty cool too.
We had a great time racing and even though we didn't have the best car in the tournament we were proud of the car we built together.
Maybe next year we can go even further - if only we can figure out the allusive secrets to Pinewood Derby speed!
